ORA-00911: Invalid Character when running "ANALYZE INDEX index_name VALIDATE STRUCTURE;" command

I am trying to execute the following command on a oracle 8.1.7 database. I took the syntax from an O'Reilly Oracle Admin. Handbook, but I keep getting the same error. Please help.

SQL> analyze index SAPR3.CCC_CHECK~0 validate structure;

    This is a sever brain fart. I'm trying to read the output from a function and I keep getting an ORA-00904 error saying invalid identifier. I'm in sqlplus trying variations of select add_five(1,2,3) from dual; also tried select user_name.add_five(1,2,3) from dual;
