Question

How to delete RMAN backups (from tape)?

Rating8.0Very Good

I'm trying to figure out how I can delete all RMAN backups of my database that are older than "x" number of days. Right now RMAN is using Tivoli Storage Manager as the MMS. Does anybody have any scripts or syntax I can use to clean out my RMAN backups up to a certain number of days ago (i.e. 7 days and older)?

This is an example of the syntax I use to back up my database (this is my incremental level 2 backup):

run
{
     allocate channel t1 type 'sbt_tape' parms
               'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/ora_db/tdpo.conf)';
     allocate channel t2 type 'sbt_tape' parms
               'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/ora_db/tdpo.conf)';
     backup
       incremental level 2
         filesperset 5
         format 'df_inc2%t_%s_%p'
         database;
     release channel t1;
     release channel t2;
}

  1. Hardware Failure During RMAN Backup
    At long last we are about to convert to RMAN backups. My boss is concerned about the impact of hardware failure during backup. He's wondering if, should failure occur on the disk to which RMAN is to write, will that impact the running of the database? All i could say was no, based on unintentionally formatting disk areas that did not exist
  2. RMAN backup  question
    Sometimes I will go into RMAN and run a delete archivelog all completed before 'sysdate -1'; I expect RMAN to be aware that it has deleted these files. Through EM i then set up a backup job where i include backing up archived logs. The job will fail complaining that it needs an archivelog that i have issued a RMAN delete command on previously. If I…
  3. RMAN backup question
    Doing a 'list backup' from RMAN, i see my full backup is about 160gb and the incremental backups are about 180 gb. Why is the size of the incremental larger than the full backup? List of Backup Sets =================== BS Key Type LV Size Device Type Elapsed Time Completion Time ------- --…
  4. RMAN does not find backup
    I am doing a test restore of an RMAN backup to another server. I have copied the previous nights complete backup to a new folder on the new server. I have successfully restored the spfile and control files by using direct reference to the file name to restore from. But when I issue the RESTORE DATABASE command RMAN does not seem to find the associated bac…
