spool command on linux

Dear experts

I am using an spool command to get the output of a sql query on to /home/ronan/file.txt
when i do like
>set linesize 1000
>spool /home/ronan/file.txt
It gives me an error like SP2-0332: Cannot create spool file

please suggest me a suitable alternative
